Mobile Shelving vs Static Shelving: Which Is Right for Your Organisation?

Mobile shelving and static shelving are both widely used in UK organisations — but they serve fundamentally different purposes and deliver very different results.

Static shelving stores items on fixed shelves arranged in permanent aisles. Every run of shelving has its own dedicated aisle — a fixed, permanent space that cannot be used for storage. In a typical static shelving installation, the aisles account for more than half of the total floor area.

Mobile shelving mounts standard shelving units on wheeled carriages that run along precision-engineered floor tracks. A single moveable aisle replaces all the fixed aisles — delivering up to 100% more storage in the same floor area.

In a typical 10m x 8m archive room: static shelving provides approximately 300 linear metres of shelving with aisles consuming 90% of the floor area. Mobile shelving in the same room provides approximately 540 linear metres — 80% more storage in exactly the same space.

Static shelving has a lower upfront cost but mobile shelving eliminates the need for expensive building extensions or additional leased space. The return on investment for mobile shelving is typically measured in months rather than years.
